Domestic Day

Yes, I realize that I'm "late" getting Layla's six month post written. Maybe it's that I'm in denial that she's actually half a year old. Actually, it's because I'm waiting till after her doctor appt tomorrow so I can include her measurements!
So for today, a random post about my extremely domestic day. We got back in town late last night from a conference in KC and today was a much needed catch up on life, mostly grocery shopping/food day. I was hoping both kids would sleep really well and really late this morning since they were up really late last night, but no dice. Instead they both revolted against us getting them soooooo off their schedules and Layla slept terribly last night, Landon woke up at 7:45 and then he woke Layla up at 8:10 when he waltzed into her room. I tried to trick Landon into taking 2 naps today by putting him down for a nap at 9:30 this morning, but instead he just boycotted his afternoon nap attempt at 3:30. Oh well. It's my fault really for messing up their schedules this weekend.
So at about 1:30 after Landon woke up from his first nap and ate lunch, we headed out grocery shopping. Today I made a new discovery.
I'm sure some of you have known about and taken advantage of this hidden gem for years, but I just today discovered how awesome it can be for the grocery budget. Two of my really good friends swear by Aldi, so I decided to check it out, and I was so excited about how much food I got for the amount of money I spent! Way WAY cheaper even than Wal-Mart! Aldi will officially be my primary grocery store from now on.
Anyway, we still had to get a few things from Wal-Mart though, so it was about a 2 hour shopping trip.
Then we got home and I put Landon down for a nap (that he never fell asleep...he did stay in bed for about 45 min though), fed Layla and then she went down for a nap and I set to work in a domestic whirlwind.
First up...Baby food making extravaganza!!

I'm planning to start Layla on solid foods later this week, so that meant I needed to get on top of getting some made! On the menu today was butternut squash and sweet potatoes. I made the purees and froze a bunch of cubes in these amazing silicone mini brownie/muffin/something molds pictured above. I only had three of them, but all of the squash and most of the sweet potatoes fit, but I did have a little bit of sweet potato leftover to put in these adorable wee cubes I won from Tatiana's blog last year.
Aren't those adorable?! They're made specifically to freeze homemade baby food. Unfortunately they're too expensive for me to buy a full stock of them, but I love the set of four I have!
Since I had the oven turned on in 90+ degree weather to bake the squash and sweet potatoes, I decided to take full advantage of it. So I master multi-tasked and also made this new Pinterest recipe for dinner:
Mexican Casserole
It was yummy; you should try it! Landon even liked it (probably because there are tortilla chips crushed up in it!) I even put half of the recipe in a foil pan and froze it for a later meal. #winning

The oven wasn't done being productive yet, and since I already had some sweet potato puree, I decided to try out this Pinterest recipe I found for sweet potato muffins:
Here's how mine turned out (I made them normal size instead of mini):
I decided these would make a good, relatively healthy breakfast for Landon. We shared one after dinner tonight to test them out, and we both thought they were pretty delicious. I froze some of them so we'll see how well they reheat, and next time I may even make a double batch! I also found a recipe from the same website to make whole wheat waffles that you can freeze, so I'm going to try those out later this week! I'll share the link if they're a success.

So I'm feeling pretty domestic today after all that grocery shopping/baby food making/cooking/baking. Unfortunately the worst part about domestic day is that the kitchen looks like this at the end.

So domestic day ACTUALLY ended with doing lots of dishes. Oh well.

And just for cuteness factor, here are Landon & Layla watching part of Cars after they both had baths before bed. Notice that Landon is doing his typical frat leg cross move and Layla is doing her typical foot in mouth move.
That's how we roll

Wow! Look at all the cooking you did! Everything looks good. even the baby food. I plan on making my own baby food as well. My mom said that she did it, and it was easier than going out to buy jars of processed food.

And who doesn't love to chill out with a Disney movie? Im excited to be able to do all that again. Abby is getting over the animated movies at her "mature" age of 9. lol
